Community Centres
Many Fleetwood residents dedicate themselves to the betterment of the community and the pursuit of higher causes. Our community is strengthened by a multitude of groups that work together to find common goals and selflessly give to others.
You will find many branches of famous international service clubs here, as well as uniquely local ones that went the extra mile to establish new standards of giving.
Many of the clubs are organized under Surrey’s Alliance of Service Clubs through the Social Policy Advisory Committee to collaborate on common causes.
Fleetwood Community Association (FCA)
Way back in 1923, the citizens of Fleetwood pooled their resources together to establish a group dedicated to improving the community. A community hall was constructed in 1933 from volunteer labor, which later moved to the Fleetwood Community Center in 1995.
The group has completed several major projects since then, including creating the Sports and Leisure Complex, Bucci Park and the area’s first off-leash dog park. FCA began the Annual Fleetwood Festival in 1998 to bring the community together for fun and to raise awareness regarding volunteer opportunities.
Another major effort FCA began was contributing Fleetwood’s story to the Surrey Archives with oral histories of residents who lived there from the 1930s through the ’70s.
Youth Engagement Project Teams
The Fleetwood Youth Services operate out of the Fleetwood Community Center’s Youth Lounge. Events are organized to encourage social enrichment and safe activity alternatives for Fleetwood’s growing children and teens. Regular activities include movie nights, drop-ins, Gamer Club meetings and dances.
Newton Kinsmen Club
The world’s only All-Canada service organization does not have a chapter in Fleetwood, but many residents participate in the nearby community of Newton.
Kin Canada donates regularly to Cystic Fibrosis Canada and disaster relief efforts worldwide. The group also organizes the National Day of KINdness where participants hand out cards, bag groceries, give away free coffee and snacks, spend time with disadvantaged people in the community and generally spread cheer to anyone they happen to meet.
Rotary Club of Surrey
Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self” rings true in Surrey’s chapter. The group focuses on several projects benefiting poverty, education and sufferers of chronic illness. Some of their programs include a workforce integration effort for people with disabilities and food programs targeting disadvantaged children.
Surrey’s Rotary Club has a popular program that encourages literacy and donates dictionaries every year to third grade classes in Fleetwood and other areas. They also regularly donate money to the BC Children’s Foundation and the BC Cancer society through local fundraising efforts.
North Surrey Lions Club
Lions Club International has an active and energetic group based out of North Surrey neighborhoods like Fleetwood. Every weekend, the group holds meat draws and donates proceeds to benefit the School Breakfast Program.
They also donate food to the Surrey Food Bank and organized various scholarships for children that excel in education and service. Their Christmas Hampers program brings baskets chock full of joy to impoverished families.
Recently, they have helped build the Kaboom Playground at Hjorth Road School and began the Movies Under the Stars at Holland Park events to raise funds for local charities.
